Culture
Culture? What’s that? The definition, according to the picture shown here, is basically a group’s intellectual and artistic achievements, customs, the everyday routine and way of thinking.
Does the U.S. even have a culture? When I was an exchange student in Germany in high school during the 1990s, one of the prominent negative stereotypes of the U.S. and Americans was that we don’t have a culture. I remember thinking to myself “wait, what? We have a culture! Duh!” But I failed to address the stereotype. I was prepared for the other negative stereotypes, such as being overweight, superficial and not being able to speak foreign languages.
We have our own visual artists, composers, musical genres, writers, etc that have helped develop and shape American culture in the fine arts as well as pop culture.
American culture is predominantly of “Western” origin, but also has been influenced by African, Latin American, Native American, Asian and other cultures. In addition, the different regions of the U.S. have varying cultures.
In this blog, it is my plan to address the wide variety of people, groups, history, etc. that have contributed and continue to contribute to the American way of life. I will write book and film reviews, as well as our history, what we celebrate, and even touch on our creative entrepreneurial spirit etc. So much to discuss! I am so looking forward to this!
